PUBLIC SPEAKING OR DYING ?
Seinfeld, the American stand-up comedian, commented about our “greatest fears”.
He noticed that in a national poll, people were more fearful of public speaking than they were of dying.
Seinfeld then made the amusing observation that the person doing a eulogy is more scared than the person lying in the box!
Well I had to do a eulogy only recently and Seinfeld was right, but perhaps not in the way he meant.
Public speaking can be daunting, especially if it’s new to you and, even more, if you have not prepared in advanced.
I had the luxury of 2 weeks to plan, write and rehearse. I then edited down from 25 minutes to 10 minutes in length. I then repeatedly said it out loud and then went through it at least 50-60 times.
I almost knew it but....following the coffin in a car, escorting one of the bereaved family members into the church and then standing up in front of 200 fellow mourners, one’s ability to think straight and operate on some kind of “normal, steady” level was almost impossible, especially as I wanted to do my dear friend justice so .......
Breathed in and out.....smiled...took my time .....and let the unconscious take over.
Greatest fear? Yes...probably.
