Survival of the Fittest?

Yes we all are familiar with this phrase but do we all know what it means?

Well it's obvious. It comes from Charles Darwin and means the strongest and fittest of our species will survive.

Well, NO.

Firstly, this phrase does NOT appear in the first 4 editions of the "Origin of the Species".

A chap called Herbert Spencer came up with the phrase initially and Darwin liked it so much he included it in his next edition.

The saying itself was then hijacked/promoted by 19th century industrialist to justify their, at times, abhorrent working practices.

Darwin's meaning of “fitness” at that time was, "the rate of reproductive output among a class of genetic variants."

He also added more importantly:

" It is not the strongest of the species that survives,or the most intelligent, but rather the one most adaptable to change."
